WORD OF GOD SPEAK

From a heat perspective, the week of August 20, 2023 was as brutal as any I’ve witnessed in central Arkansas.  Not only was it a scorcher of a week, it was without precipitation, making the humid heat seem worse.  When it is dry for any length of time during the summer, I find myself watching the weather forecast more often, looking for any hope of rainfall.  Then, when the weather breaks and rain comes, I want to stand out in it, looking up into the heavens praising God for the blessing He has provided.

Similarly, there are times in our lives, for whatever reasons, we find ourselves yearning for God’s word to change whatever rut we have gotten ourselves into in order to be refreshed in a way only He can provide.  The lyrics of a MercyMe song come to mind when considering that sort of need:

Word of God speak, would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see Your majesty
To be still and know that You’re in this place
Please let me stay and rest in your holiness

This past Sunday, Pastor Lawrence made reference to a question GT Ikard had asked him recently, which I am paraphrasing as “What would you say to your younger self if you could, knowing what you know now?”  The question brought another MercyMe song to mind in the form of Dear Younger Me, recalling some of the lyrics:

Dear younger me, I cannot decide
Do I give some speech about how to get the most out of your life
Or do I go deep, and try to change
The choices that you’ll make cuz  they’re choices that made me
Even though I love this crazy life
Sometimes I wish it was a smoother ride

We can’t change the heat and lack of rain from last week.  Similarly, we can’t change the history of our lives.  What we can do is learn from our experience and delight in God’s word, using it to transform into what He created us to be, treasuring His Word like refreshing rain.

Psalm 119 (NLT) “111 Your decrees are my treasure; they are truly my heart’s delight.”
