PENTECOST: THE CALL OF THE SPIRIT FOR US TODAY

La historia humana siempre ha estado marcada por momentos que lo cambian todo. Para Israel, fue el día del Éxodo, cuando Dios los liberó de Egipto. Para la humanidad entera, fue la cruz y la resurrección de Cristo. Pero para la Iglesia, hubo un día que definió su identidad y misión: el día de Pentecostés.

Human history has always been marked by moments that change everything. For Israel, it was the day of the Exodus, when God delivered them from Egypt. For all humanity, it was the cross and the resurrection of Christ. But for the Church, there was one day that defined its identity and mission: the day of Pentecost.

Pentecostés no fue simplemente una fiesta judía más; fue el día en que Dios cumplió su promesa, derramando su Espíritu Santo y encendiendo un movimiento imparable que transformó el mundo. Lo más asombroso es que ese mismo Espíritu sigue vivo y disponible para nosotros hoy.

Pentecost was not just another Jewish feast; it was the day when God fulfilled His promise, pouring out His Holy Spirit and igniting an unstoppable movement that transformed the world. The most amazing part is that the same Spirit is still alive and available for us today.

Originalmente, Pentecostés era una fiesta judía celebrada cincuenta días después de la Pascua. Era un tiempo para agradecer la cosecha del trigo y recordar la entrega de la Ley en el monte Sinaí. Allí Dios escribió sus mandamientos en tablas de piedra. En Pentecostés, sin embargo, Dios decidió escribir su ley directamente en los corazones por medio de su Espíritu. En el Sinaí hubo fuego, viento y temblor. En Jerusalén, en el día de Pentecostés, también hubo viento, fuego y lenguas. La diferencia fue que Dios ya no estaba formando un pueblo bajo la Ley, sino un pueblo bajo la gracia y el poder del Espíritu.

Originally, Pentecost was a Jewish feast celebrated fifty days after Passover. It was a time to give thanks for the wheat harvest and to remember the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. There, God wrote His commandments on tablets of stone. At Pentecost, however, God chose to write His law directly on people’s hearts through His Spirit.

Lo primero que resalta en la historia es que el Espíritu descendió cuando los discípulos estaban unánimes, juntos en oración y expectativa. La unidad no es opcional en la iglesia, es una condición esencial para el mover de Dios. Donde hay celos y divisiones, el Espíritu se entristece, pero donde los corazones laten al mismo ritmo, el cielo responde. Si queremos ver avivamiento en nuestras comunidades, necesitamos volver a esa unidad que abre camino al derramamiento.

The first thing that stands out in the story is that the Spirit descended when the disciples were in unity, together in prayer and expectation. Unity is not optional in the church; it is an essential condition for God’s movement. Where there is jealousy and division, the Spirit is grieved, but where hearts beat in rhythm together, heaven responds. If we want to see revival in our communities, we need to return to that unity which opens the way for the outpouring.

El descenso del Espíritu tampoco fue algo tímido o discreto. Hubo un estruendo, un viento recio que llenó la casa, lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron sobre cada uno. El viento trajo vida nueva, el fuego purificó y capacitó, y las lenguas mostraron que el evangelio estaba listo para ser anunciado a todas las naciones. No fue un espectáculo sin sentido; fue una capacitación sobrenatural para la misión que Jesús ya había entregado: “Recibiréis poder… y me seréis testigos.”

The coming of the Spirit was not timid or discreet. There was a sound like a mighty wind that filled the house, tongues of fire that rested on each one. The wind brought new life, the fire purified and empowered, and the tongues showed that the gospel was ready to be proclaimed to all nations. It was not a meaningless spectacle; it was a supernatural equipping for the mission Jesus had already given: “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses.”

Ese mismo día, algo extraordinario ocurrió: personas de distintas naciones escucharon el mensaje en su propio idioma. Si en Babel las lenguas habían dividido a la humanidad, en Pentecostés las lenguas fueron el instrumento que Dios usó para unir a todos en Cristo. Así nació la iglesia: como un movimiento multicultural y global, no atado a un idioma ni a una sola cultura, sino abierto a toda la humanidad.

That same day, something extraordinary happened: people from different nations heard the message in their own language. If at Babel languages divided humanity, at Pentecost languages became the instrument God used to unite all in Christ. That is how the church was born: as a multicultural and global movement, not tied to one language or a single culture, but open to all humanity.

El impacto fue tan evidente que nadie pudo ignorarlo. Algunos se maravillaron, otros se burlaron, pero todos tuvieron que reaccionar. Así también, una vida llena del Espíritu nunca pasa desapercibida; debe provocar preguntas en quienes nos rodean y señalar Cristo como respuesta.

The impact was so evident that no one could ignore it. Some were amazed, others mocked, but everyone had to respond. In the same way, a Spirit-filled life never goes unnoticed; it should stir questions in those around us and point to Christ as the answer.

Pentecostés fue la chispa que encendió la misión de la Iglesia. Lo podemos imaginar como la antorcha olímpica: una pequeña flama que enciende un fuego que recorre ciudades y naciones hasta iluminar al mundo. Lo que comenzó en Jerusalén ha llegado hasta nosotros. Ahora el desafío es no dejar que el fuego se apague, sino dejar que arda en nuestro interior y pasarlo a otros.

Pentecost was the spark that ignited the mission of the Church. We can picture it like the Olympic torch: a small flame that lights a fire traveling through cities and nations until it illuminates the world. What began in Jerusalem has reached us today. Now the challenge is not to let the fire die out, but to let it burn within us and pass it on to others.

Pentecostés no fue el final de algo, sino el inicio de una misión. Ese mismo Espíritu que encendió a los primeros discípulos quiere encender tu vida hoy. La invitación es clara: no te conformes con una fe apagada. Ora al Señor con sinceridad:

Pentecost was not the end of something but the beginning of a mission. The same Spirit that ignited the first disciples wants to ignite your life today. The invitation is clear: do not settle for a faith that has grown dim. Pray sincerely to the Lord:

“Señor, lléname de tu Espíritu, enciende en mí el fuego de Pentecostés.”

“Lord, fill me with Your Spirit, ignite in me the fire of Pentecost.”
