THE MYSTERY OF GIVING

An excerpt of the Prayer for Peace, from which we have been studying, states, “for it is in giving that one receives”.  The Christ-followers of Mosaic are well acquainted with how this works because of their confidence in God’s promises and His Spirit living in them.  Their faithfulness has been manifested throughout the church’s history of over twenty years.  Jesus revealed how this process works in Luke 6 (ESV) 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

God understands our needs. He knows our hearts as well and wants us to live a life with a sense of abundance rather than one of scarcity.  In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth, he said (2 Corinthians 8 ESV) 1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.

Generosity is not exclusive to Christ-followers.  But our generosity is to go beyond that found in the world. We should all check ourselves regarding our generosity.  We should test it to see if it’s showing more courage or more caution.  Solomon encouraged a courageous view of life when writing the Book of Ecclesiastes, where he prods us to live boldly, including in our generosity.   He reminds us that, even when life is filled with things that may be out of our control or influence, one controllable area is how we choose to live it and give it.

Ecclesiastes 11 (NKJV) 1 Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.
